As a massage spa, we don’t believe in offering the same massage therapy to every client. We understand each person’s unique needs and preferences and use various massage techniques to provide comfort and pain relief.

Two of our most popular types of massage therapy are Deep Tissue Massage and Swedish Massage. While they both have an amazing effect on the mind and body, their technique and purpose are quite different. Here is all you need to know to choose which one you need:

Swedish Massage

A Swedish massage is a classic technique mainly used for relaxation and stress relief. Depending on your need and preferences, this massage can be gentle and slow for relaxation or vigorous and firm to loosen tight muscles.

The massage therapists apply five different stroke movements (gentle to firm) to loosen tight muscles, promote blood circulation and lymph drainage, and enhance flexibility. Its process also stimulates the nervous system that helps in treating psychological stress.

Who Should Get This?

Swedish massage is perfect for first-timers as it uses the most basic techniques that can help you get used to the massage. This massage is for people who spend hours in front of a computer every day and have a stiff neck, shoulders, and back.

This massage is also helpful for people with stress or anxiety disorder or who need to unwind and pamper themselves.

  • Stress relief
  • Muscle flexibility
  • Anxiety treatment
  • Improved posture
  • Improved mood
  • Increased blood flow
  • Increased range of motion

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep Tissue Massage targets connective tissues and deeper muscles of the body instead of the Swedish massage that only works on superficial muscles. It uses slow and forceful strokes to break down muscle adhesions (knots) that cause pain and inflammation in our body.

It starts with a gentle massage, but gradually the therapist increases the pressure to reach deeper layers of the muscles. Sometimes you may feel a little pain when releasing a stubborn knot. However, the entire massage isn’t supposed to be painful or uncomfortable if you get it done by a professional massage therapist.

This massage stimulates healing from injuries or ailments by realigning the muscles and releasing chronic tension.

Who Should Get This:

People who suffer chronic pain conditions such as lower back pain or injuries and other health ailments. It’s ideal for athletes, gymnasts, runners, or even stiff body and muscle soreness.

Deep tissue massage has also proven to help expecting mothers in labor and delivery.

  • Relief from chronic pain
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Improved lymphatic drainage for easier movement
  • Minimized scar tissue
  • Rehabilitation of injured muscles
  • Treatment of arthritis symptoms

Which massage Should I Choose?

Deep tissue and Swedish massage both promote improved physical and mental health, but the difference lies in their techniques and the level of pressure. Get a Swedish massage if you need relief from stress and muscle tension. But if you are suffering from chronic pain or recovering from injuries, a deep tissue massage can promote healing.
